DIY Dress form

In case you missed it, I was a guest blogger for the first time this week
AND
I'm having my first giveaway!!
Go check it out at RoCa and Company!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My summer goal is to make clothes for myself.
So far, most of my attempts have been wildly unsuccessful.
So frustrating...
Anyway, I thought I dress form might help me in getting things to fit better without having to try things on repeatedly and try to measure myself in the process.
Spending a few hundred dollars on a real one was out of the question.
So I followed some instructions from Prudent Baby and gained a little inspiration from Law Student's Journey.
Here's what mine looks like along the way.
Of course I forgot to take pictures of me all taped up.
 I used an old pair of crutches turned upside down as the legs.  It's a little unsteady though.
Since I ran out of purple duct tape and had to use silver duct tape and then masking tape, I decided to use up some of my scraps.  I cut all the edges with my pinking shears, ironed them all (can you say tedious?) and grabbed my Mod Podge.
Mod Podging all those scraps on was definitely the fun part!
I used some yarn to mark where I would likely measure for the waist of a skirt. And I used the holes in the crutches to mark where the top of my knees are.
Unfortunately, the shoulders make it difficult to get things on and off of it and I'm pretty sure my hips are a little wider than my dress form indicated.
But I don't care!  It's pretty! So if I don't ever really use it, it's at least a nice reminder of some of the projects I've made.
  1. Love this...I've been thinking of making one for me as well. I know I would be up to making more clothes for me if I could just measure it on a dress form.
  9. You did a great job! I remember seeing this idea in a book about refashioning t-shirts. I've been wanting to buy a dress form in my size but since I'm tall and pear-shaped they don't make them in my size.... that is, unless I could spend $1000 on a custom form, which I can't! So, I may end up making one myself pretty soon. Thanks for the inspiration!
